Introduction
🏎️ what are/were the consequences of colonization? 🏎️
This project, as you can see by the title is about the consequences of colonization in Canada. But what were the consequences of colonization in Canada? In this post, I will go over what we learnt about in this project, the final product/assignment, how I got there, my answer to the driving question, and some long lasting affects of colonization.
Background information
Throughout this project, we learned how to make effective notes. In this project we used our notes taken from multiple in class lessons about the colonization in New France and just more information about colonization in Canada as a whole/how it affected first peoples. We learnt about many conflicts between Europeans and first peoples, such as : The beaver wars, and the Iroquois war.
What was our task?
Our end task was to create an 11-15 slide keynote with a 3 person group which showed our learning throughout the project, and answering the driving question. My group decided to make our keynote focused on the social aspect. For this, we talked about conflicts, ethnocentrism (which means the act of thinking of a different culture as weird because of how immersed in your own culture you are,) and what life was like in a colony. This is what my group’s final keynote looked like (Cole Webb, and Sawyer Lammie were my 2 group members)

What next?
After finishing our group presentations, our next task was to make an individual keynote by ourselves which would answer the driving question. The individual keynote could only have 3 words, as many images as you want, and only 2 slides. Mine came out to look like this.
Consequences of colonization INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION HERE.
As to how it went, I believe I answered the driving question properly but didn’t quite present it well in my individual keynote, and I wish I did a bit more with the keynote in terms of design. My answer to the driving question was: “Consequences of colonization include; loss of natural resources native to a habitat, economic collapse, death and conflict (which mostly happened from certain wars between the Europeans and indigenous people, some examples of these include the beaver wars and the Iroquois war), this ties into the loss of culture. Another example of how death happened was diseases which have no cure. Many lives and resources manipulated for the gain of (in this case) an empire (the Europeans.) Ethnocentrism is also a huge part of the consequences of colonization, an example would be leading to residential schools and the death of loved ones, leaving behind generational trauma which still affects people today. Residential schools took indigenous people’s language, values, and whole culture away from them. Causing a need for reconciliation. In conclusion, even though colonization was bad, it is also the reason that lots of us are here in Canada today.”
Conclusion
In conclusion this project helped me grow my knowledge of how colonization happened, and how it has had its lasting impacts. To wrap this blog post up, throughout the project I believe I demonstrated a proficient understanding of the concepts talked about and applying them to the keynotes. Thank you for reading my blog post!
