🏎️ How does electricity shape our society and how can we generate it more sustainably?🏎️
Introduction
In this project, we learn about different circuits, their uses, and how to make them ourselves! Some circuits we made include: a series circuit, open circuit, and closed circuit. Using these concepts we learnt, we can apply them to our board game! But more on that later. To help us remember which component is which for when we are drafting our games, there was this handy sheet!
Energy infographic
This is my energy infographic, my type of energy I chose to research was wind energy. But how does wind energy work? Well, wind turbines and wind mills work by using the wind to make electricity, but how? This is done with propeller blades which are part of a turbine that are spun around a rotor. The rotor spins the generator, and creates useable electricity! The earliest wind mills were made in 500-900 AD, thats about 1500 years ago! With the first turbine being built in 1887, in the UK! China uses the most wind power out of any country, next being the USA, Germany, and India. China is home to the biggest land wind farm in the WORLD which is a main contributor, despite this, china still get most of their power from coal. But what are some pros and cons of wind energy? Starting off with some advantages, wind energy is completely non pollutant, wind energy is also renewable energy, meaning it comes from something that won’t run out. Another great thing about wind energy, is that it is also very cost effective. However, wind power also has its disadvantage, such as the noise pollution and damage to wildlife habitats. Another point on why wind turbines can be bad, is because they are limited to location, and you need to be somewhere windy to use them!
My board game and how it works
This is my board game! Since we had to use a character of our choice for an operation style game, I chose to attempt at drawing Luis Suarez at Ajax (who is a soccer player.) How does my board game works though? Well, there is electricity run the tin foil and there are wires attached from the battery to the tin foil, then from the battery there are another set of wires clipped onto a pair of tweezers, when your tweezers touch the tin foil, it completes the circuit which will light up a small light we also attach onto our circuit! Unfortunately, my game was a bit finicky and wouldn’t always work, this was because it was kind of hard to keep the wires attached with the lightbulb and battery. Here is my game!
My answer to the driving question/conclusion
My answer to “How does electricity shape our society and how can we generate it more sustainably?” Would be: electricity shapes our society in many ways, some of which we don’t even notice. Electricity is everywhere and is something that would be very inconvenient to live without! Electricity gives light, heat, and entertainment! What would we do without it? We can sustainably generate electricity with things like hydroelectric dams, solar panels, and wind power! These are just a few examples, and some examples that aren’t so good include burning fossil fuels, and nuclear power. These methods of generating power are more polluting and more dangerous. Over time we will run out of fossil fuels, but we will never run out of wind or water.
