Operation Barbarossa

Hello and welcome back to my blog. Today we are doing yet another weekly blog post. As the title suggests today we are going to be talking about operation Barbarossa. This was probably one of the biggest mistakes of Nazi Germany in WW2. So without further ado let’s get into this.

Operation Barbarossa was a decision made by Hitler to invade the Soviet Union in June of 1941. This side of the war was extremely brutal as Hitler said he would forgive and war crimes committed in the operation. Germany launched over 3 million troops into the Soviet Union in a surprise attack. They made startling progress getting to the outskirts of Moscow itself by winter of 1941. At around this time Finland attacked the Soviet Union from the north and caught Leningrad in siege with the German forces. The operation was halted due to the crazy cold winter and thus the eastern front came to more of a standstill. Hitler then focused efforts into Russia’s heavily industrialized south regions. This campaign was halted at Stalingrad in an extremely pivotal battle with a million+ casualties. His is when Stalin started pushing the German armies back toward Germany.

There have been many movies made out of this extremely brutal front in the war. Some have been dramatizations but others, for example come and see show the horrible brutality of this front.

This has been my weekly blog post for today so thank you very much for reading and I will see you later.
