I learned how to draw. Let me explain.

The second project of Maker 8 we learned how to draw on the iPad. We learned shading, how shapes are used in drawing and linear perspective. We also learned how to make a sketchnote, but more on that later.

For this project we were divided into two groups. My group was the Carr group. We didn’t do much with Emily Carr, but that’s what the group was called. Throughout the classes we had crash courses on different elements of design. We learned about linear perspective, shading skills, how to sketchnote and how to show depth. In our final class we zoomed a graphic designer and asked her some questions. For example what’s the best part of your job? Or what’s the hardest part of your job and so on. Part of her job is making logos for companies, so we tried that as well. We made up companies and then designed logos for those companies. Out of all of these lessons and assignments I found one especially useful.

Sketchnote

Sketchnoting is in a nutshell, taking notes with drawings and other visual elements. They have 4 major components: containers, writing, connectors, and drawings. Writing and drawings put down the information and containers and connectors help with flow and readability. Sketchnotes allow you to put down lots of information in in an easy to read and good looking way. They are more interesting than writing and can express more emotion and mood. They are also more eye catching. When we were learning how to sketchnote we watched a ted talk by Sunni Brown. She explains about how it’s disgraceful to sketchnote at work and school, but it’s actually better at retaining information, more natural to humans, supports thought process and a bunch of other stuff.

Driving question time:
How might I use technology to create and communicate?

I use technology to create and communicate by creating drawings and writing papers such as this one. I can write and draw much better on the iPad because of the undo buttons. The ability to copy and paste, undo, fill in big areas, store near infinite supplies, and keep in contact with people all over the world just make life so much easier. The amount of power at your fingertips is unmeasurable.

Since this project is about learning to draw, I’ll show some drawings that I made in it.

This was the first class assignment in which we learned how to use the tools and write in different fonts.

In this drawing I show how to make a sketchnote

This drawing shows how I (tried to) use linear perspective

Conclusion

I learned a lot about drawings and how to use them to express thought clearly. I can make more realistic looking drawings because of of the linear angle lesson, I can show depth with shading, and how to organize my thoughts in a sketchnote. I’ll definitely use the sketchnote skills in other classes even when I’m not drawing.
