Breaking news: I suck at essays.
Sorry, wrong mindset. I suck at essays yet. But I am trying. And staying positive. And, you know…. Writing essays.
Welcome
to the second project of the year, and the second world war project, on the second world war. It consisted of a two-week research phase, using WWII as the topic to circle our essay around, followed by two weeks of learning how to write essays, and at the end, actually writing them.
I like the research phases of projects because of how chill they are. In this project there were a lot of powerpoints. I mean like a lot. The teacher used those to bring the topic closer to us. I learn a lot about topics with PowerPoints because they are very engaging. Before we started learning about essays we did some kahoots. Questionable for learning, but they were fun. The requirement to pass these kahoots was to ace them, but you were allowed to practice a lot, They always had the same questions, so you just need to memorize the facts. I guess that’s what history is about.
Can you learn something new about a topic everyone is familiar with?
World War II
Of course you can learn more! Not a single person on this planet knows everything about anything. I learned specifically about the advancements in Canadian healthcare, such as Tommy Douglas’ Universal Healthcare and Child Benefits which were created as a direct consequence of WWII.
Rough draft and essay writing process
PLP has been my umbrella which kept me untouched of the long-form writing up until now. There is a leak, pouring down cited sources and unabbreviated words which penetrated into my world. Until now.
Due to this, I have very little experience with long-form writing. We had some lessons about the rules and fundamentals of an essay to catch us up on how to write essays, and more importantly, how to critique and edit an essay.
My rough draft was full of informal writing, mistakes and even unfinished sentences.
Thank you to Silas for the critique!

Conclusion
Although essays may not be my strong suit, I enjoyed the research phase, learning a lot from it. I have learned how to phrase questions in a way to find information I want, and how to determine and explain historical significance in a sophisticated and formal manner.
