Atomic Habits Learning intentions

A habit is defined as “an automatic behaviour that is repeated frequently, becoming so routine that it is performed with little or no conscious thought”. This dictionary description makes habits seem small and unimportant, like they’re just things we do without thinking. In reality, habits shape everything about who we are and how our lives turn out. They can lift us up; however, they also have the capability to hold us down.

Atomic Habits the Project

We are starting a project called Atomic Habits, inspired by the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, where I will be working hard to be able to answer the driving question: how can improving just 1% each day help me take responsibility for my learning, strengthen my habits, and create balance and purpose in my future career and life? Throughout this project, we will read Atomic Habits, complete several reflections and assignments, with a public exhibition where we’ll share the positive habits we built and how they affect our lives.

My Take on the Driving Question

As of now, I don’t really have much of an idea on how to answer the driving question, but here is what I think. If you improve anything by 1% a day, all those small improvements add up and eventually lead to 100%. Even if you are just doing something very small to reach your goals, you are doing something, and that is better than nothing.

What I Know

Last year in Maker, we completed a project called ‘Level up: the 7 habits challenge’ where we had to create 3 blog posts and a short video for each one, displaying a few of the 7 habits in the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens’. That project taught me a lot about positive habits that make for an effective person. Through it, I developed useful habits such as making a goal ladder and setting timers while I work, small but effective tools that help me stay organised and focused. What I Aim to Get From This Project

As shown in the habits mind map I made for the launch of this project, I have quite a few habits I need to improve in order to become a better learner and a better person. At the end of this project, I hope to have tackled some of these habits and acquired skills to tackle them all.

In my Vision, Mission, and Values, I reflected that the habit most holding me back is my awful addiction to my phone/TikTok. It affects my attention span a huge amount. I now find it hard to focus on one thing for too long, and I get distracted by it when trying to be productive. It is the only way I know how to relax now, and it is affecting my mental health and makes me feel guilty. I would love to improve this habit, even if it is just by a little bit. It would make me become a more effective learner and present person.

Skills I Will Use to Get There

In order to build better habits, I will use my listening and information processing skills. The book Atomic Habits will give me tools that will help me to better myself, and being able to really take in the information will help me. I’ll also rely on determination and self-discipline. Changing a habit isn’t easy, it takes real effort and consistency. I need to be driven and determined to go through the challenging process, one small improvement at a time.

Final Thoughts

This project is about creating a real change in myself. If I can learn to make small improvements every day, I know they’ll add up to something big. I hope to not only have stronger habits but a stronger sense of how to answer the driving question.

World War 2 Learning Intentions

World War 2 Learning Intentions

Have you ever wondered how a story of the past can be remembered completely differently depending on who is telling it?

The Project

The events of World War II still shape the world we live in today, influencing our society. How do stories media, and propaganda shape how we remember World War II? This is the question we aspire to answer at the end of our new project. Throughout this project, we will be learning about the key events, figures and consequences of WWII. By the end i hope to understand not only what happened but also how those events continue to be remembered, and why it is remembered in a certain way.

What I Know

Going into this project I know little to nothing on the topic of WWII. A few years ago I read the graphic novel White Bird by R.J. Palacio. This book taught me about Adolf Hitler, the awful man who led Nazi Germany and started a movement built on hate  And discrimination against Jewish people. I learned about the murdering of over 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, while many others lived in fear and hiding. Besides what learned from White Bird, my brain is a clear slate, ready and eager to learn about the  events of WWII.

What I Want to Know

I have so many question I aim to answer by the end of this project: Why did Germany elect such an cruel and awful man like hitler? Why did hitler hate Jewish people so much? And why did he want them gone? What were the significant battles? What were the defining moments of the war? How did it come to an end? What was life like afterwards?

Most importantly, I hope to be able to answer the driving question confidently and be able to teach people my findings and knowledge.

Strengths I’m Going to Use to Get There

I have a lot to learn and create within this project, and in order to get there I have take advantage of my learning strengths. In my Vision Mission Values, I uncovered that I am strong at creativity. Everything I create I always try to go above and beyond and think outside the box which makes my assignments stand out and makes them more meaningful. Also, I am strong at self directed learning. I am a very motivated learner and am determined to take my learning in my own hands, set goals and wok hard to achieve them. I plan to use this drive to make sure I stay focused and driven throughout the project.

Strengths I Need to Improve

In my Vision Mission and Values, I made the goal of improving my skills in communication and collaboration. When working with a group, I often have trouble trusting that others will do work up to my standards. This leads me to take on a huge work load, causing me a lot of stress. Going into this project I aim to improve how I collaborate. I plan to do this by stepping out of my comfort zone and putting trust in my peers. Also, throwing a team meeting when something isn’t going to plan and communicating the issues in the group, that way everyone will be on the same page and everything will be in order.

Conclusion

By the end of this project I will have used by skills in creativity and self directed learning, and gained skills in communication and collaboration to to gain a deeper understanding of WW2, not just the events but also the role it still plays in our society today.
