What do you call it when two terrorists are horsing around on the radio? Talibanter
Determining who is and isnt a Terrorist is much more complex than it initially seems. This was a topic we’d circle back to a lot over this short 3 week project—the central theme of which was terrorism in general. Over the course of the project, we’d watch numerous documentaries, read various articles, and whatever other kinds of research in order to prepare for 2 different Socratic Seminars. The first seminar’s topic would be much more narrow—simply ‘terrorism in the name of liberation’, then the final one would go over ALL areas of terrorism. This format has its advantages—the whole class would gain a collective understating of terrorism with these biweekly group discussions. However, I feel like I do my best research when there is something clear I’m working towards (i.e. a final product). So for me, it wasn’t my favourite way of doing things. However, during these Socratic Seminars I found myself participating much more than in previous ones. Having a real interest in the subject definelty makes you more willing to do research and engage in the discussion. In the second seminar, I was particularly proud of one point I made—“whats the difference between war crimes and terrorism?”—Sepaus actually came up to me after and said he thought that my point was interesting. Overall, I was happy with my performance during this project, and found myself improving my communication skills, and overall knowledge base.

This was undoubtedly the shortest project we’ve ever done in PLP, but at the same time it was one of the most interesting. Terrorism is a subject I’ve never done much research in, so I gladly went along with this project. Honestly I wish the project went on longer with actual products at the end instead of solely Socratic Seminars. But ultimately, I’m happy we got around to studying this topic in depth becasue with the way the United States is being run right now.. we may see a few more instances of this. Hopefully not, but you never know.
