Societies deal with changes throughout history. How do these changes happen? Well now I can tell you all about that because we just completed our Revolutions Through the Ages Project. In this project we learned about cause and consequence and used different revolutions for examples. All this learning had to do with our driving question: How do Ideas Drive Change? So, for this blog post I will be answering this driving question. To do this I will be dividing my answer by the different curricular competencies.

Cause and Consequence:

A revolution is divided into parts much like this post. This system is called Crane Brinton’s Theory.

These stages follow revolutions from beginning to end. This beginning and end could also be referring to cause and consequence. The cause begins with an idea. Take the French Revolution for example, the people were unhappy with their living conditions for many reasons and the ideas shared at the tennis court oath led to a revolution and eventually consequence. In the French Revolution the big consequence was a change in government from monarchy to a democratic style government.

Evidence:

How did I research and use reliable sources for this project? When creating a video to inform others about a revolution, you have to be informed yourself. Of course this is done by researching. I used sources like websites and videos. Especially for these sources, when I was researching I had to judge weather or not it was a reliable source. When I Researched for the American Revolution video I used this competency by researching.

Create and Extend Shared Understanding:

This is basically the group work part of this project. I worked with my awesome group: Ally, Liam and Meg. Our group created a shared document for every video so we could all share our ideas. I think it worked well. Here is an example:

Especially when creating a video, it’s important to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Text Comprehension and Appreciation Strategies:

This project as you may know, went along with a book. This book was called Revolution. The book deals with similar themes as the project. As we completed the book we did a creative reflection. This shows how we understood the story. I created an animated book cover. I wanted to represent the setting (Paris) and the character Louis Charles. This character plays a big part across the book. He is also a symbol of the French Revolution and its consequences.

Conclusion:

Overall, here is what I learned: I learned the stages of a revolution. I learned how revolutions begin and how it impacts people and places after. I practiced using reliable sources and working with a group. I also learned how to connect knowledge from texts to my overall learning. Finally, how do ideas drive change? When someone doesn’t like the way things are in their society (government, money, food, ect.) then they might try to do something about it. This is where the idea is born. Change is the consequence of the revolution that started with that idea. That change could have a long lasting effect.
