School? Useful Or Not

Hi, This is my last PLP post of the year. This last project was a little abstract. We were asked to evaluate the current school system and make a change that we would want to see. I chose to even out all classes at every school. This idea was a little unattainable but I thought it was an important topic to discuss. Anyway let’s jump into this

So I made a digital piece of art to relay my idea symbolically. I also made a cardboard mural on the wall next to me displaying the shape of a tree to enforce my idea. This was a suggestion from Mrs Maxwell which I appreciate as it worked well. I had visitors draw and customize this mural with their favourite class. It was a big success in terms of engagement from the audience. However, I feel I could have done better on my digital art. The overall project and performance went well. My only F.A.I.L. was my art piece as it was not up to standard with my skills and what I could have made. More of a personal gripe than an actual problem but either way could have been much better.

We also got to speak with the NVSD School Board Chair, Kulvir Mann. She was an amazing motivator in my projects as the topics she spoke about were connected to my project. So I used a lot of the notes I collected from her presentation in my work.

So in terms of overall project quality id say it was accomplished, I created an artifact that displayed my idea of change and answered the driving question. My art was not bad it had good effort put into it and had meaning

The tree mural was a last-minute idea and came through. It was interactive and creative and caught people’s eyes. I had people write their favourite classes on this tree at the end of my pitch. As it was an engaging thing and had them connect to my project more

Now let me answer the driving question: How might we transform schools to create more engaged and informed citizens? I think that students learn through topics they like so if they are forced to learn something they don’t like then they will unengaged or bored. If we made it so they can pick their interest then they could pursue courses they liked. This is unattainable due to funding and politics. So I thought to myself if this were to happen. What if every school had the same classes and funding? This way no one would be limited based on the school they attend. This started because I was not able to have the same kind of class that my cousin did at Handsworth. That’s what started this roundabout idea. So that’s what my answer would have to be. We can create more engaged and informed citizens by making sure each school has the same opportunities.

Conclusion

This is my last blog post of the year. Looking back I liked this project it was giving us students a bit of control over the school system we use and learn in. I learnt a lot about the NVSD School District and its leaders. Knowing more about where I’m learning is mandatory thanks for reading and have a lovely day or night depending on where you are, bye.
