What Draws Us To Imaginary Worlds? Or Dimensions…

So this post is about the fantasy unit project form way back when, where we had to answer the question, what draws us to Imaginary Worlds? Well to answer that question we were told to pick any attraction that you could find at disney world, disney world because our class took a two week vacay to the sunny state of Florida. Well I shouldn’t really say vacay since it was a PLP trip so we did have to do at least some educational stuff, but where better to learn than out of the country?

The first thing my class did when they got to Florida was go to Magic Kingdom, I’d visited about a week earlier and with my mo because I was already down in Florida for a field hockey tournament. I had to meet up with my class two days late and I missed what sounded like the two best days, Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios. I’ve been to both in the past but more rides have been added since then and it’s always more fun with your friends.

Back to the actual project. Leading up to the end project for this unit which was a video explaining how our ride draws you into it’s imaginary world, we had to do quite a bit of work. Starting with reading “Alice In Wonderland”. Once we were done reading the book we wrote an in class essay on how the author creates an imaginary world through the book, allowing the reader to create and visualize waht’s happening. As well as answering the question of what draws us to imaginary worlds. We were given the topic ahead of time so we had about a day to research outside of the book and be able to provide strong supporting evidence for our reasoning. If you have a ny interest in reading what I wrote here’s my Fantasy Essay.

The next step was planning and figuring out what you wanted your ride video to look like. We had to take all the things we’ve learned in the past two years, steps of heroism, the advertising techniques (ethos, pathos and logos), different kind of shot angles, audio and filming techniques. We were given a storyboard template to fill out with EXACTLY what we wanted to happen in our video. Even how long you wanted each slide to be and what you were going to say.

Once that was done, we went to Florida where when at disney world I felt I did nothing but film but looking back now I had an amazing time and got way closer to some of the kids in my class. I have no idea how many times I ended up going on Hollywood Tower of Terror and Mount Everest, my two favourite rides.

I am happy with how much I did film though, it gave me a lot of variety of footage to choose from. And my end movie didn’t turn out at all as I had planned, like most of my projects. It also looked pretty different than my first draft. I used most of the same clips and audio I but it looked much much cleaner and in the first draft something happened when I uploaded it and it had these black patches instead of the smooth transitions.

When I handed this in, I got tons of feedback, both good and bad. The most important things I took away from it was the lack of voiceover, the black spots and how unnecessarily long the twilight zone video was. Once I edited all of those things the video was a solid minute shorter, getting to the pint faster and not giving the viewer time to get bored like I’m guessing you did watching the last one. For my final draft I also added some titles, as recommended by the teacher.

Although there was a lot of critique I had to undergo to get to my final draft, it was all extremely helpful and improved my video in so many slight ways that made it significantly better.

Overall I loved this project, not only because we had the chance to go to Florida. It also allowed me to reflect on all of the skills we’ve learned throughout our two years in PLP, improved my communication and people skills (having to ask for interviews and permission to film in certain areas) and had me really dive into this project, it was something I really enjoyed creating since it’s one of my favourite topics, I love movies and wondering how they effect people, especially disney ones.
