Grade 8 Concluding project- Comic cells

The final project of scimatics, and also the final project this year, had us make comic books about a cellular process. I personally found that this project was more difficult than expected, although to be fair I probably put more work and effort into this than anyone else.

At the very beginning of most Scimatics projects, we usually make mind maps to show what we know, what we can learn, and what questions we have. This project was no different. The mind map I made was fairly simple, as I really didn’t know much about cells at this point. In fact, I thought cells and molecules were the same, which just goes to show how little I knew.

The second milestone had us make a wanted poster for a certain disease. The poster required a name, time period it was active, how many people it killed, and how it infects someone. This was one of the more fun parts of the project, but didn’t have much impact on the final product.

The third milestone was just a khan academy test for knowledge of cells, but fourth and fifth milestones were really where it started. Fourth milestone was a storyboard outline of the whole comic, and the fifth milestone was the final comic, which was the thing we were actually getting graded on, so it was kind of important.

I started work on the storyboards earlier than most people, but I redid them at least twice, then had to revise them after I handed them in. I don’t think I ever got a definitive mark on my storyboards, but I did everything I said I would in the final comic, just without doing the storyboards first.

The amount of effort I put into this project was overwhelming, probably even more hours than a previous project, Chemistry Coding , which I also worked on for too long. I really did this to myself though; this wasn’t that hard of a project, I just set myself a standard, that was probably unrealistic, and forced me to do excessive work. In other words, I should stop working so hard, and stop striving for perfection with every project.

To finish, I will answer the driving question. This time around, its:

“ How do cells and diseases interact? “

This is a very simple driving question in my opinion, though one that is still important to the project. Everything we have done in this project answers this question, so a simplistic answer would just be to say that by completing this project, I have learned how cells and diseases interact, for better or for worse.

On a finishing note, I will say that this has been a good project to conclude the school year with, and also a good project in general, and I hope we do more projects like this in the future.
