The Power Of A Growth Mindset

In our Maker class we were learning about having growth mindset and a fixed mindset. All throughout the unit we watched videos, did assignments and did sketch notes on people who we know had or has showed a good example of a growth mindset.

Their are a lot of people that I look up to, but the two people who stand out to me are Chris Hatfield and Mikayla Shiffren. Chris Hatfield is a retired astronaut, he was the first Canadian to walk and live in space. For five months Chris Hatfield spent his time living inside the international space station. The amount of things Chris Hatfield would have overcome while under an extreme amount of pressure and up in space is crazy. Having a growth mindset in high pressure situations is extremely important. Especially if your life and possibly others depends on it. If you have a fixed mindset, during times of conflict or adversity you will fall apart and won’t be able to work and will not be willing to try.

Mikayla Shiffrin is a world cup ski racer who won gold at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games at only age 18. Mikakla is a very high performance athlete, she has worked incredibley hard to get where she is today. One of the biggest things that makes her an amazing ski racer is that she has a growth mindset. The top ski racers on the World Cup all need a growth mindset because they have to be able to push them selfs to get better, get back up when they fall, and never give up.

These two people in my mind are amazing, they both have showed incredible skill in so many different possible. I think is interesting that two people who are so different and when into completely different fields of work share something the exact same, a growth mindset.

I learned a fixed mindset is when your mind is fixed on one particular situation, idea or answer and isn’t open to any other possibilities. A growth mindset is when your open to criticism, failure, critique, setbacks, challenges and other possible answers or outcomes. A fixed mindset can change a lot of things and can be very hard to let go of, but once you have a growth mindset you have a more open mind. If you said “I can’t do this,” than your growth mindset would say, “yet!”

The last project we did in our unit of growth mindset was called the selfie project. For the selfie project we had to think of a long term goal for this year that somehow fit into school and having a growth mindset but wasn’t to broad or specific. My long term goal includes skiing and school. “I want to maintain balance in my life between skiing and my school work.”
