TPOL 2024!

Hello everyone! It is that time of the year again, time for a tPOL. Here are some of the key points of mine!

In this presentation of learning, we have been given the task to show how we represent 3 different success behaviours. Agency and two others. So I decided to choose Communication and Collaboration, and Self-Regulation. Here is the document that we were given.

So I will quickly describe them for you guys, so pretty much success behaviours are things we aren’t graded on, but things that will help us get better grades. For example, Agency is the most important because it is all about getting the work done, but the others are all very helpful bonuses.

Here are some Agency goals that I have for next year:

  1. I want to be able to ask my teachers, parents and peers for help and accept and revise their feedback if it is applicable by midterm next year. I will achieve this by asking my “feedbackers” to look all my stuff over!
  2. I don’t want to hand anything in late, all school year. I will achieve this by putting Things notifications for the night before, and doing my best to have it done the night before, but if it can’t be, it will be done by 9:00.

These will help me very well currently, and in the future!

Here is another goal for Communication and Collaboration:

  1. In every group that I am in I want to be the one who is responsible. I will do this by taking charge of the group and focusing on highlighting everyone’s ideas.

It is very important to get good at leadership, as shown from a little expert from my Dragons Den pitch:

Other than my physical fitness, rowing has taught me many soft skills that I am sure I will use later in life. Some great examples are leadership, communication, and teamwork. Whoever is bow seat in a scull, or boat, is responsible for the boat. I prefer using the word responsible instead of in charge, because I feel like good leadership isn’t just about telling people what to do, it is helping them get there, and being ultimately responsible for what they have done. Anyways, leadership is very important to experience, because you get to understand the responsibility that the leader has.

Do any of you guys have an image you think of when you think of balance? Here is the one I think of.

If we do a little Apple Pencil magic, we can see how my life balances out right now.

Anyways, thank you everyone for reading my short TPOL post, I will see you all later!

Back To The Future

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog! Today I will be talking with you guys about a project I did recently called Back To The Future ➡️. In this project we were focusing on Habits of success, Planning resources, Skills assessment, Representing yourself publicly and personally, Employment marketing.

All of these also helped us with the end goal in mind of pitching ourselves to two “Dragons” in a sort of mock job interview. Have you seen Shark Tank or Dragons Den? It was like that, except we pitched ourselves for 7 minutes, and then there was 7 minutes of discussion. Mine went really well, but I will tell you about it at the end of the post.

The first thing we did in this project was look into our skills, interests, and personalities. To do this, there were various activities, including doing some quizzes to discover our personalities, and which jobs would best fit us. Here is a link to those quizzes. In the end, some of the different skills they said I had were manual dexterity, numerical ability, and verbal ability. I don’t think I specifically learned anything about myself, as I already know myself very well, but it was interesting to see what the quizzes thought of me. Here is a short paragraph I wrote on my thoughts of the test.

I feel like I agree with everything, except some of the jobs. Maybe they would be best for me, but I know that some of them I don’t want to do, and I want to do others. Also, there’s that thing that for a job you either get it because you want the money, or you like it. Preferably it would be both, but I think I would prefer the money so that I can do my own fun things outside of work. I specifically agreed with the jobs that were Other Professional Occupations In Therapy And Assessment, Program Leaders And Instructors In Recreation, Sport And Fitness, and Recreation, Sports And Fitness Policy Researchers, Consultants And Program Officers. I have always wanted to be a doctor, and I think they meet my values very well.

After we learned about ourselves, we looked at how we are going to get there. We looked into the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, which highlighted different habits that will help us to where we want to be. Here is a link to the different habits that the PLP teachers put together for us. I highly recommend reading it, it is very helpful, and even if you only start with one of the habits, I guarantee that it will help you.

Next, we learned about how we market ourselves for potential employers. We wrote a cover letter and a resume, both of which I will attach here.

Cover Letter

And last but certainly not least, is the pitch to the dragons. We started with this basic document, and ended with a full-blown, 7 minute pitch, and I think everyone was actually happy with theirs. In preparing for the pitch, I asked myself a lot of questions that I thought the Dragons would ask, and came up with good answers for all of them. Honesty, I didn’t really learn a lot about myself when preparing, or after. I think that I know myself very well.

Here are the feedback forms the dragons gave me. I am quite happy with the feedback I got! The experience of pitching to the Dragons was great for the future, because it taught me that practice really pays off. Even if you only practice once a night for a week, you do get pretty good at it.

I’m glad that Mr. Scheewee said I would be a definite hire! I think the reason for it was all of the different examples I gave. I used rowing, PLP, piano, climbing, etc. The skills and examples I learned and gave in this pitch will be very helpful in applying for jobs in the real world. When an employer asks questions to give examples, I believe that I can give a sophisticated answer.
