Turns Out The GPS Worked…

Going in to Destination Imagination provincials is like riding a new bike. You’ve already learnt how to do the activity, but you aren’t sure if you are going to be able to adjust to the new features. Neither Regionals nor Provincials went as originally planned. Having said that, I’m not totally sure if that’s a bad thing. Because at the end of the day, we made it to Globals…

The biggest change that was made in between the two tournaments was the replacing of Kai. A week out from the big day Kai surprised us by telling us that he couldn’t come. That’s when things got hectic. The scariest part of this was that Kai was the main character with lines in every scene, this made it difficult to figure out the best way to go about solving this issue. The tournament was on Saturday and it wasn’t until the Tuesday of that week we agreed on the solution. The plan was for Lucas to take Kai’s part and for me to take Lucas’ role as the shopkeeper (as I did at regionals). Looking back I don’t understand how I couldn’t wrap my head around this.

Anyways, enough about prepping. The actual competition went really well. We completed our instant challenge prior to our main challenge this year, which was partly why we did so well. The instant challenge went extremely well. We received a task-based challenge this time, rather than a performance-based one like we got at regionals. Like I wrote in my previous DI blog post, our team feels as though we are better at task-based instant challenges. So once we got in to the room and had a look around, we all felt pretty confident. We were fortunate enough to once again receive a perfect 100 score.

Our main challenge also went extraordinarily well. We had lots of time to prep and run through our lines, so when it was time we were all ready to get it over with. If there was one thing I noticed that was different from regionals, it would be how relaxed we were. We took everything a bit slower, while still making sure we didn’t fall behind. We weren’t stressing during the performance (well at least I wasn’t). The only thing that went wrong with the performance was when we were cut off by time. It was so devastating because we had only a few lines left. Luckily though, nothing important was cut off.

In the end, DI was a success. Even with all the setbacks and delays, we made it through. Our work was so good in fact, that our team came first in not only the instant challenge, but also the main challenge, securing us a spot at DI Globals. As of the time I am writing this I’m not sure whether or not our team will be competing at globals, but hey, it’s the fact that we made it that counts.
