Hello blog readers,

Look at this podcast!

This podcast has taught me a lot, this unit in general has taught me a lot and you’re here to read all about it. Recently in plp we have switched from videos to podcasts and soon we will all be podcast experts but first we have to become WWII experts.

The driving question for this unit was “What is the legacy of WWII in Canada?” Before we could make the podcast we had to learn all about WWII first. We had this amazing pages sharing document as our learning guide. Every time we would learn about a new point in the war I would write notes and take photos of the teachers notes and I’m really happy I did this because it was a good way to stay organized. We watched a lot of videos and took a lot of notes. Here are a few photos of my WWII notes.

Now that you know what we learned we can start talking about the podcast making. There are a lot of different podcast styles. Everyone in class did a solo podcast but we put it all into one playlist on SoundCloud. From the beginning of the project we knew we would be collaborating with the Memory Project to get interviews. I got the pleasure of interviewing Jack Purdie along with Adlih and Jamie.

Before we interviewed Jack Purdie we wrote some questions we could ask him but most of the work could only be done after the interview. He lived in a senior home a while away from our school but we drove all the way to him to hear his story. It was an incredible time and he was a very wise man. I’m really happy that this project gave me that wonderful experience.

Our interview was the last one so we only had 2 days to make the first draft of our podcast. I rushed in writing a script for the podcast but I made sure to put a lot of time into the outro because it would be my answer to the driving question. Using GarageBand was really difficult at first but after a while it became easy and effective. The editing tools in GarageBand are very easy and the app works really well when you learn how to work with it. The skills I learned from the app is still in the works but I believe if I make a couple more podcast I will become a great GarageBand user.

During this project I had a lot of ups and downs. Working on the different drafts did help me figure out what I wanted the podcast to sound like though. Sometimes when I see my failure I forget that it’s just my first attempt in learning but this time I made sure to remember that. That motivated me to keep working on the podcast. The end result is something I’m proud of and being able to put this podcast on SoundCloud as a class was something that made this worth it. I’m happy that we made this project a podcast because it helped me learn WWII in a different but better way.
