Set design…..

Hello everyone, like I mentioned in my last post we have started preparing for this years exhibition! A big part of this exhibition will be set design…. as we will have to convey most of our ideas visually, so that drivers can understand. While talking about the exhibition in class, I remembered one of my favourite nonfiction books ever…. “What an Art Director Does.” The book is by Ward Preston, a very successful Art Director. Born in 1932, Preston worked in film set design from the sixties to late nineties. His book goes over topics such as…. Film history, drafting and design.

Preston explains in great detail how to create amazing sets. Additionally including fascinating images throughout the book. Here are some of my favourites….

While concept drawings and drafting is really important in the creation of sets, Preston really focuses on the importance of photography. Images of the space in which the sets will be built are key to a really successful set piece. Having photos reminds a designer of the space they have to work with.

After reading through this book, I started sketching some ideas for the exhibition…
