Throwback to that time I impersonated a Colonizer

Welcome back to my blog. Today’s blog is about a book that we made in our most recent project. In this project we asked ourselves,“What sparked global exploration and what was the impact?” This was our driving question, and all through this project, we learned how to answer it.

We learned about Vikings and how they were a big factor in starting global exploration. We also learned a lot about how Europeans traveled and why. The book I made is about Jacques Cartier and how he discovered the Americas.

I hope you enjoy!

Answering the question who am I as a PLP learner?

Hello, welcome back. Today I will be answering the driving question: Who am I as a PLP learner? I think I can answer this question by looking back on my Keystone and Laptop Memoji  assignments. In these assignments, I have been showing exemplary work and understanding of what I am supposed to be doing. I have been asking for helpful feedback and critique so that I can give my teachers the best possible pieces of work possible.

This photo is half of my Keystone #3 (In Humanities). I got the mark that I wanted on this project, and I think it represents my help in group work. I took this photo for our group, as a final piece of work for our project on the book, ‘The Outsiders’. The other half of this project was to record a voice note through the app that we use (Showbie). I think that I could have personally done better on this part of the Keystone, by making my voice note longer. My focus on the voice note was to make my thoughts clear, Instead of making it long.

This is my Laptop Memoji that we made in PLP. I think this project really represents my creativity and skill when it comes to technology. I really enjoyed this project because it helped me ease into projects and due dates, and using my time wisely. I think that I did very well in this project, because I met and exceeded all of the criteria, which is ultimately always my goal.

This is an aspect of my Keystone #1 (In Humanities). I really liked this part of the keystone because I was able to incorporate important aspects of my life into it, and still fully meet the criteria. I think this project was good for me because it really forced me to ask for critique and advice. Overall this project was very fun and helpful.

This is another aspect of my Keystone #1 (In Humanities). This was, in my opinion, the most important part of the Keystone, because I had to think very deep. This was challenging for me, because it is often harder for me to think as deeply as I should in this type of assignment because I like to have time when I need to think deeply.

In all, these assignments are what make me a PLP learner.

Thanks for reading!

My first Mpol ever

(Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.)

This post is all about a thing we call in PLP ‘Mpol’. Mpol stands for Mid Year Presentation of Learning. In this presentation I will be talking about my successes, things I could do better, my learning plan, and also some of my favourite projects.

In the half of the year that has already gone by, I feel like I have accomplished a lot. The one  subject that I think I have done the best in is Humanities. In my learning plan for Humanities I set my expectations very high (Extending). I think I did this mostly because I like to challenge myself, and also because I know my brothers have high expectations for themselves and I like to take after them.

My learning plan for Humanities specifically talks about taking a bunch of risks, and also going out of my comfort zone. I think that I have accomplished most of this this semester.

In Humanities by itself we have already completed 3 projects, and 1 sprint. (A sprint is a one week project we do to improve on a certain skill.) All of these projects were very new and exciting, and have helped me improve as a learner.

The Outsiders (Link to My Project)

The Outsiders was our first project ever in PLP. This project was based off of the book, ‘The Outsiders’ by S.E Hinton. During this project we had to read The Outsiders with a small group of classmates in chunks of chapters, then complete a task that would reveal something about the book we might not have noticed. For the most part I really liked how we got the opportunity to talk among peers about things in the book we might not have understood, or even just things we thought were interesting. However, there were a few times where we all didn’t agree on something, or someone wanted to take charge of a discussion or something but somebody else didn’t want that person to. When ever this happened it led us off track quite a bit, and it was often hard to get back on track. These disagreements only happened a couple times each week.

Our Final product from this project

Power Play Project (Link to My Project)

This project was our second Humanities project and in my opinion, it went very well. In this project we learned about The Crusades and Middle Ages and how back then the quest for power impacted peoples lives. This project was really new for me as I have never learned about anything like this before.

This project out of all of my projects best represents an Extending understanding of the topic in my opinion. I think this because I met all of my learning goals in this one project (ie. going out of my comfort zone, providing help to peers, etc.) and received all rainbows, which was my goal. I think a reason for some of my success is my determination to the project, and receiving a grade that I can be proud of.

Radical Invocations (Link to my project)

This was our third and final project in semester one of Humanities. This project I found had some of the hardest task, even though when I look back on it they seem easy. During this project we were making a piece of art from the Renaissance called a Triptych. A Triptych is a way of communicating anything from a story to a lesson to a historical event, and were often found in important places such as Church’s.

Some assignments in this project were very tough on me as a learner because I didn’t know how to do them or hadn’t done them before. I think that struggling was honestly good for me because it reminded me that I should always be shooting for the best product I can present, and that it isn’t always easy. During this project we learned how to use some very cool and helpful apps that I will definitely be using in the future. Most of these apps taught us how to photoshop and edit photos together so that we can create unique and accurate photos that represent our learning.

My Triptych

My final revised version of my Triptych. I am very proud of it because I put a lot of thought and effort into it.

Some areas in this project that I think I could do better in are double checking the instructions during assignments, using my time efficiently, and also focussing on Ms.Willems when she explains the instructions of an assignment.

One area of my learning in humanities that I think I could improve on is my organization of assignments. I like to keep all of my due dates in my head which I am quickly learning is not an efficient system, because I will now and again forget about an assignment and hand it in late. I can help myself by using an app we are given called ‘Things’. Things is a task manager that is very helpful, especially when you have a lot of things to keep track of. I don’t use Things that often because I find that I have to go out of my way to put it in the app. I think that Things is a very helpful and important tool that I could and should utilize.

Maker

Maker easily the most unique class I have ever been in. I really like Maker because it is not like any other class I am in this semester, and also because I can use my creativity almost every day.

My learning plan is mostly about improving general skills, like collaboration, creative process (or Launch), and also giving and receiving helpful and/or critical feedback. I think that I did quite well when it came to giving advice. An example of me giving helpful feedback is one of our projects: Making Interesting images.

Making Interesting Images(Yet Another Link to My Project)

During this project we were given the opportunity to give and receive helpful feedback. I really enjoyed this because I thought that a new perspective from another person on our images was very beneficial. I also enjoyed giving feedback to people because I realized how effective good feedback can be.

The one thing that I really didn’t like about this though is how people would not actually try to give feedback, but instead just write something useless down like, ‘I like the Colours’, or even just ‘nice job’. I know that our teachers can’t hold everybody’s hands while teaching how to give feedback or it wouldn’t be truly there honest advice, I just hoped that everybody gave as much effort on giving feedback as they hoped to receive in their’s.

one of my photos

Overall looking back on my first semester in PLP, I think that I have met my goals, while also improving in all the places where I had hoped to. I have created pieces of work that I can be proud of, while also learning how to be a part of my class. Looking forward to the rest of the year, I hope to be able to continue developing my skills as a PLP learner, as well as provide work in every project that shows a complete and sophisticated understanding of the topic.

Thank you to listening to my first ever Mpol. I hope that I have shared with you how I think my projects have gone so far, and what I am looking forward to next semester.

Staying Rad with inventions from the Renaissance to now

(My final triptych)

Hello! I’m back again with another blog post, this time about an older type of artwork called Triptych that we made in PLP. A Triptych is a way of communicating anything from a story to a lesson to a historical event. I chose to make my Triptych mostly about Science in pre and post Renaissance, and even about today’s science and health. I found that I learned a lot during this project about the Renaissance and the interesting history around it.

During this project I learned that the ideas from the Renaissance helped develop modern medicines in more ways than I had previously thought. The ideas from the Renaissance helped doctors and engineers and scientist develop newer versions, better versions of things that we realized made life easier, and prolonged human life. These ideas also helped people learn about things like the human body and even the earth and galaxy. We have been building on these ideas since they have been discovered because we realized we could make them better, which I think is very smart.

People from before the Renaissance had different, less effective, and way more dangerous  ways of doing things than we do today. We have since developed upon these ideas because we knew we could do them better. The idea of wanting to know more about nature and the human condition through discoveries in science and art was expanded in the Renaissance. It during this time period the science, art and philosophy all came together.

The ideas we have today have been inspired by thinkers and inventors from the Renaissance and even before. We today have built upon things that could be done better because these things and innovations make our life safer and easier in general. Today we are still building on these ideas because they can and will be done better. People today are still learning from the Renaissance and the failures and even the successes that people in the Renaissance made, and we are learning how to make those ideas better and more current.

Overall I think that I leaned a lot about how people in the Renaissance developed ideas and

how people from then to now have built upon them. I really enjoyed this project because we built upon more than our knowledge about the Renaissance, we also learned about time management and note taking. I hope that you enjoyed my Triptych, and that you learned something about the Renaissance. I highly recommend you look at the Renaissance online, because it has such an important part of history and our world today as we know it.

Thanks for reading!

During this project I really liked how we got to explore with photoshopping apps and the effects that they had on our triptychs. I made the decision to add new people in each photo because I felt like if they were the same people that it would take away from the things that needed attention. (the actual inventions)

If I were to do this project again I think that I would try to make my triptych look a little bit less cluttered because it kind of makes it look rushed, which it wasn’t.

Overall I think that this was a great project and would happily do it again.

My Book about Drawing

Hello!

Todays post is a bit different, todays post is all about a book that I made.

Over the past week we have been learning how to draw in an app called Sketches Pro. Sketches Pro is a very powerful app that I think everybody should use.

The way that we were tasked with sharing our learning was by making a Book in an app called Book Creater.  I had fun making this book, and I hope you enjoy it!

Our Middle Ages and Crusades Project.

Learning about The Middle Ages and Crusades was new for me because I have never learned about them before. I found it mostly easy to learn about this project because of how it was structured I think. I liked how we got all the materials Ms.Madsen used to teach us, so that we could refresh ourselves whenever we needed it. Another reason I think that I liked this is because I found it easier to learn outside of school, which is helpful when you have a homework assignment.

The final product from both The Middle Ages and Crusades was to make a keynote presentation. I liked making the keynotes because I could organize how I presented the slides as well as how many slides (as long as it was over 5). I chose to make more slides than necessary because, I thought I could say more about the Crusades/Middle Ages. I think that the slides I made were very accurate and deep to the events that happened in these time periods.

Here are the (blurry) title slides of my Keynote presentations

the driving question for this project was, How did the quest for power impact peoples lives in The Middle Ages? This question was pretty simple for me to answer I found. It impacted and affected peoples lives whenever and wherever the change  and quest for power) went. It affected people because people ether didn’t like the change and fought for things to go back to normal, or thought that there was not enough change, and fought for more. This meant that many people had to fight in wars/Crusades, meaning many people died, leaving empty homes, or even Towns. That’s how I think the quest for Power (or change) impacted peoples lives.

Overall I think that this project thought me how to effectively use what I learned to teach other people.

My First Exhibition

This Exhibition was very fun and exciting. I say this mostly because of how much flexibility we had. We could basically present anything as long as it was relevant to Avatar, Our and incorporated a box. I also like this because it is sometimes easier to get feedback, because people can be more honest, and not have to follow a feedback criteria chart or guideline, I have found.

Building the actual box was challenging and not challenging at the same time. It was challenging to me because I thought that we had more in class time, when we really didn’t. Looking back on that miscalculation, I think I should have double checked our timeline and expectations with a teacher or peer.

One part of the box building that I thought were not especially hard was planning. I had thought of a good idea to represent my learning and opinions in a box, all I had to do was write it and sketch on my ipad. However, I did find it tricky to show exactly what I was thinking in my draft, so I had to adapt it to accurately show a realistic and understandable image of what I had imagined. The draft eventually turned out quite well in my opinion. I think this was one of the hardest parts of the whole project.

Here is my sketch.

The night of the exhibition I think was a new and exciting experience for all of us PLP learners. Even though I have two other brothers in PLP, and have been going to there exhibitions since I was eight, it was still new to me. I think setting up the rooms went pretty well because of all the support the older grades gave us. If we had to set up the rooms all by ourselves in the small amount of time we got, I think they would look pretty bad.

I actually found it really easy to talk to all the people that came to the exhibition. I found out that you can basically just say the same thing to all of them, while just rewording your sentences slightly. I thought that this was a good strategy, because I was still saying what I wanted to, to each and every person.

This is a (blurry) photo of my box.

Over all, I really appreciated the flexibility and feedback the teachers gave us when it came to creating our boxes. If I could do it again I think that I would try to, leave more time for building, and also ask for more feedback.

Making Interesting Photos.

Today we will be answering another Driving question, but this time it’s about making photos. The driving question is: ‘How might I use the still image to create and communicate through technology?’

I think that I can answer this question by talking about how your photos can show emotions. Showing emotions in photos is very important because it really adds character and depth to the photo, and when it has those qualities it is more appealing. I feel like if the photo is not appealing to the viewer, then the viewer will look over it as just another photo.

This project has taught me that every photo is interesting and unique in it’s own right, and I think that technology can really help you highlight a photos uniqueness. There are so many modifications that you can do in the camera app and third party apps, that I think its hard to not show off a unique and emotional photo.

During this project we learned a lot of strategies to use while taking photos. Some of these strategies were familiar to me, but most weren’t. These strategies were very helpful, and fun to use. Here are my favourite three.

One, Editing. I really liked this strategy because I was able to easily add more life to my photo. What I mean by this is I could add an interesting subject to a not particularity interesting photo. This would make it more appealing to the eye.

Two, Lighting. I found this strategy fun because I could experiment with location and background as well while taking these photos. I found that if you adjusted the lighting all the way up (so its super bright) while taking a photo in a dark space, it does not look good. However, when taking a photo in a bright space and you make it darker, it does not look that bad. These are just some things that I found while experimenting.

Three, Filters. I think that this is maybe one of my favourite strategies out of all of them because you can change the emotion when you add a filter. You can change the emotion, because the filter adds character to your photo. A filter can make your photo have a positive, or negative emotion.

Here are some of the photos that I took.

Thanks for reading about my photography unit, I hope you learned something interesting!
