Poetry writing is something that I have never been fond of, throughout my childhood it was one of my least favourite things to do in socials as it never really clicked with me how to express emotion through words like that.

Recently that changed with our new project on poems that focused specifically on the “beat” poems of the 1950s. These were poems written by a generation that wanted to express their dissatisfaction with the government and time period they lived in.

For the assignment we were tasked with creating an series of poems to present for the Winter Exhibition as part of our re creation of the Star Wars cantina. To do this we would need to write a collection of poems to present, these could be about anything and could be in any poem format we wanted to present.

Poetry is still hard for me and I had a hard time getting used to it. Luckily we did many assignments on different types of poems and how to use them. We also did a test on poetry analysis, learning all the different terms used to describe poems and what they are conveying. By the end of it all I was pretty confident in my ability to write poems.

When we actually got down to writing poems my main issue wasn’t coming up with what ti write rather it was the actual writing itself. I constantly found myself deleting older work that I didn’t think was as good as I wanted it to be. So the poems I presented were presented with a large amount of hesitation on my side as I was very nervous of what they portrayed or how they would be viewed.

There was a lot to do to set up the performances as well we were presenting in the

There was a lot to do to set up the performances as well we were presenting in the winter exhibition which was star wars themed so we had to fit the part. We re created the cantina from the bar to the newspapers and even a live performing band which I performed with. It was a very fun night and the flexibility I got from not having to stand at a presentation table for hours on end made it more enjoyable than a normal exhibition.

Historically this project was very interesting to me, the beat generation was something I had never heard of before and it was much larger than I originally thought.

I do think it went well though. Here is my video from the presentation as well as some of the poems I made in my poetry collection:
