Article 15 outlines that Indigenous people and their culture have the right to be represented in ways that are positive, respectful and not discriminatory.

Article 15
1. Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations which shall be appropriately reflected in education and public information.
2. States shall take effective measures, in consultation and cooperation with the indigenous peoples concerned, to combat prejudice and eliminate discrimination and to promote tolerance, understanding and good relations among indigenous peoples and all other segments of society.

So why is this Article important? It’s important because it outlines that Indigenous people have the right to live free of discrimination. More specifically, it details their rights to have their culture and ways of life represented appropriately, with respect and without prejudice. This has a positive impact on Indigenous Communities as it encourages collaboration to promote tolerance and good relationships between Indigenous communities and all other segments of society within B.C. and worldwide.

I chose this Article as it centres around the rights of Indigenous People’s culture being taught for educational purposes and these learnings being shared to the public, as this is exactly what we are doing in this course.

While making this video, I began to wonder if the puppets intended to represent Indigenous People available for use violated this exact Article… watch the video above to learn more!
