Celebrations!

This weeks Student Blogging Challenge is about Celebrations! I’m going to explain a holiday from Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and, Judaism. Then I will have a poem I wrote about Christmas. First I will just list the holidays my family celebrates.

  • Christmas
  • Halloween
  • Easter
  • Canada Day
  • Thanksgiving

These are the holidays I will go over. Holi which originates from Hinduism, Ramadan which originates from Islam, Christmas which originates from Christianity, Vesak which comes from Buddhism and, Hannukah which comes from Judaism.

Holi,

Holi is a festival celebrated primarily in India and Nepal at the start of spring. It lasts one night and one day. It is known in the western world to be the festival of colour. The night of Holi involves a Holika bonfire to celebrate Vishnu a Hindu god’s triumph over evil. On the day of Holi people go out and throw coloured powder at each other on the streets. Recently kids go out in groups and use coloured water in water guns and some kids have found other creative ways to get each other colourful. Holi sounds really fun!

Ramadan,

Ramadan is a month of fasting celebrated by Muslims around the world during the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar (April, May or June). It involves fasting for all daylight hours. Once the sun sets many families of feasts. Muslims believe Ramadan will cleanse them.

Christmas,

Christmas is a christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Although, Christmas is celebrated by many non-Christian families around the world especially in the western world. My own family falls under that category. Christmas involves giving gifts to family and friends. Parents of younger children tell about a magical man from the North Pole who rides around on a sleigh pulled by nine reindeer comes down everyone’s chimney and gives kids who have been good gifts and kids who have been bad get coal.

Vesak,

Vesak celebrates the birthday of Siddhattha Gothama or the Buddha. It involves Buddhists going to their temples and hoist the Buddhist flag. It is normally celebrated in April or May.

Hannukah,

Is an eight day jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the temple of Jerusalem. It involves lighting candles on this special stand with 1 bigger candle in the middle and four smaller candles on either side. Every day you would light one of the smaller candles until they were all lit.

Sketching Reflection post

Hi everyone,

We just completed a project about learning to use our Apple Pencil on our iPads. We learned many things over the project. Including different sketching techniques, ideas on how to make better sketch notes and many other things. When we started this project I was like “Oh no” because I didn’t have that much with art and sketching in the past. I kept a growth mindset and realized that sketching isn’t so bad and there are even types of sketching which I like! Our driving question for this project was “how can we use our pencils to enhance our learning?” The competency we were working was empowered learner.

Every single thing we did worked on this competency as we were using our iPads and Apple Pencils to make and achieve excellent drawings, sketches and logos. I feel like I did quite well on this competency I displayed this in all the things we did. I felt empowered when I realized that I was better at sketching and graphic design then I previously thought. The reason I did so much better in this project is because I used technology to my advantage and kept a growth mindset!

Our first milestone was Word Art. We had to draw our names in interesting and creative ways, using the techniques we were shown in class. I liked this assignment and I think I did an ok job at it. The parts which I liked were how we could use the fill tool to make cool patterns inside the letters and experimenting with different tools, especially the airbrush.

The second milestone we did was sketch noting. In this we watched a video about the power of a growth mindset. Taking sketch notes from this video we demonstrated our skills with connectors and symbols. I made some creative connectors but didn’t use them because they were to complicated to do quickly. Overall I prefer note taking in text but I can see why sketch noting is useful.

For this third milestone we had to trace and draw an image of ourselves. This one was very difficult and took me around 4-5 hours but in the end I persevered and created a good self portrait. I felt I did very well on this although I did not love this. The reason so, is because I don’t love tracing and colouring large areas in, I wanted to use the fill tool but it wasn’t working.

In our fourth milestone we had to sketch a fruit bowl and use the lighting techniques we learned in class. I did not do the best on this milestone as I didn’t use the lighting technique well enough and probably could’ve spent about 20 more minutes on this. I got the feedback that I didn’t use the light source technique which we learned in class. In my opinion this was my worst milestone.

This was my favourite milestone. We had to make logos for some companies we made up. I did 3 different companies. Alpine Ski co. A ski shop. PNW pics a photography company and Moxy Skis a ski brand. I used Keynote, Canva and, Sketches Pro. Sometimes a mix of all three. I think I did really well on this milestone and I overall really like it.

  • This is one of my favourite logos for alpine ski co.
  • This is probably my favourite logo for Alpine Ski co.
  • I liked this colour scheme and I think it was interesting and different compared to the normal blues.
  • This is pretty much the grey one but blue, I don’t like this one quite as much as the grey one but It’s pretty good.

  • This is my first draft, I like the colours but I quickly realized that the text shouldn’t be over the image.
  • This is my first and possibly my favourite logo for PNW PICS.
  • This is my other favourite logo for PNW PICS I can’t really decide if I like this one or the camera one first.
  • This is my final logo, and in my opinion my best one!

  • This is one of my other logos, I decided I would experiment with putting the text inside the logos.
  • This was my first logo I did for Moxy Skis in my opinion it is a little bit to complicated but I still like it.

All in all, this was a great project. I ran into some difficulties with sketching but I kept a growth mindset and created some amazing work. I feel this really improved my skills with an Apple Pencil.

Emojis

Hi everyone,

For this weeks student blogging challenge we had to do some stuff to do with Emojis! Personally I really like using emojis sometimes because you can often express more with emojis than text.

Emoji Quiz:

Here I have a slider for an emoji quiz. Don’t forget to leave your answers in the comments below!

Emoji Math:

Try and figure out what each emoji is worth in order to solve a math problem! Tell me your answer in the comments!

My New avatar. I’m deciding to change my avatar! I think this new avatar represents me better. First of all I’ve got my hair more similar to my real hair this time. Also, I have a facial expression. I’d say my facial expression is quizzical and I’m often quizzical.

The Media is the Message reflection post

Hi everyone,

Since the school year started on September 3rd 2019, we have been working on a project called the Media is the Message. This project was all about advertising. I have learned many things about advertising since then.

We started this project off with watching an ad for the Apple HomePod and reflecting on the ad. Looking back on it, I don’t think I did a very good job. Although, when I first wrote I did think I did think I did a great job. The reason I don’t think I did a very good job the reason so, is because I didn’t know enough about advertising and even the software I was using to do well.
Our next Milestone was an advertising survey in which we asked our parents questions about their perspectives on advertising. The first time around I didn’t read all the instructions and did terribly. The second time, I read the instructions and did a decent job.

During this project we had to be able to recognize media and, analyze text of all kinds. Our driving question for this project was “How does what we hear, read and see influence us?” How does it? In my opinion anything we hear, see or read will influence us in someway. When we hear, read or see anything our brain tries to remember it. So the basis of advertising is to put ideas in our brains, wether we realize it or not. A great example about how hearing something can influence us is, younger children. Say, when a 3 year old kid hears their mom, dad or anyone else they look up to say something they will want to say something like them. If their mom always says super nice things about everything, they will likely do the same. But, If they hear there Mom say super negative mean things about everything, they will do that. With advertising companies our trying to put messages in your head through hearing things said aloud, seeing things being done or reading things put on billboards or in newspaper, they want to influence you to like their brand more. Also, the companies likely want you to trust them. Some of the companies which do this the best are, Nike, Apple, Coca-Cola and many other big companies.

Our 3rd Milestone Involved making a persuasion chart about Advertising. On the persuasion chart we had to get examples of ads and convince the audience what kind of advertising they where using. I would say I did a really good job on this Milestone.

During this project we had to chances to analyze text. The first time was Our first Milestone, the welcome home dissection. The second one was Milestone 4, the Highest tide analysis. I improved at this skill a lot through the 2 assignments. The first time I wasn’t sure what to do. I kind of just did what I would have done for a book report in elementary school, which was not what was expected. This second time I learned from my past Mistakes and improved upon it. I’m still nowhere near perfect, even in 10 years from now I’ll still be far from perfect. But the biggest thing is that I learned from my mistakes and improved upon them.

Our 4th Milestone was analyzing a book we read called the highest tide. I think I did a pretty good job on this although I’m not really sure exactly how well I did.

Ads

  • This is my first Ad. There is many things which could of been improved upon but overall I like it
  • This is my second ad. Although I improved upon some features of the first ad I think it is worse.
  • This is my third draft of my ad. It is pretty similar to my final draft but the image in the background is different and the fonts are different. I think this was a pretty good attempt.
  • This is my fourth ad. I think it is worse than my 3rd ad although I did make some things better.
  • This was my Fifth and final draft of this series of ads. I definitely think this is my best attempt although there is still so much I could improve upon.
  • This is my first draft. I don’t think it is that good although it is better than quite a few of my later drafts. I did this ad without interviewing Chalet so, I didn’t have all the information which I needed
  • This is my second draft for my ad. Although it looks ok it’s not a very good ad for many reasons such as the fact that it doesn’t focus in on an image
  • For this ad I fixed the font to make it look more like the font chalet uses. I focused in on one image but I still did a few things not so well such as that weird grey filter in the background. It was a major improvement since my last ad but still pretty bad.
  • For this ad I kept most of the good things from my last ad and removed the horrible filter but I didn’t ad the address or give enough information about the business.
  • For my final attempt I added more information about the business such as a their address. I still don’t think it is great as it doesn’t look like a real ad but it was my best attempt yet.
Our next 2 Milestones were both about making ads. Our first ad was about a Parkgate or a Deep Cove business. My group did InGrain, a restaurant and a company which makes pasta. I really liked making this ad and I thought I did a pretty good job. My second ad, has not been going very well so far. It’s about a Restaurant in Newport Oregon called, Chalet.

So to wrap things up this was a amazing but long project in which we learned a ton about advertising in.

Music!

Hi everyone,

Week 5 of the student blogging challenge is all about music. I’m doing three things to start off I’m going to have a playlist of some of my favourite songs, then I’m going to have a song I created, and finally I will have a survey about music.

https://open.spotify.com/user/c0ep2t0feoe9ek67hwfqmie6x/playlist/2TNC2spS3N9ohLh8SR9Koi?si=R1_caPxKTm-_JzxF4Tzqag

The First song on this playlist is Middle Child by J. Cole. I like this song for quite a few reasons. First of all, I like how this song sounds. Also, If you listen to the lyrics he’s rapping about how he is different and he is proud of it. The next song is Ransom by Lil Tecca, I like this song because of how it sounds I kind of just like all the aspects. The next song is Did it Again, Also by Lil Tecca. I think the reason I like this song is because it is different from other rap songs with the Piano intro, the background rap and the drum machine. The next song is Shots, another song by Lil Tecca. I like this songs background synth and beat. This next song is quite different for one it is not a rap. It’s called Fly, by Marshmallow. I like this songs beat and how it changes from soft to louder and more intense. After Fly comes KOD, By J. Cole. This song is really unique for a rap song, especially the intro. Now we have The London, by Young Thug featuring J. Cole, and Travis Scott 2 of my favourite artists. I think the fact that it has so many different artists and a good beat is why I like it. After it’s Love me, by lil Tecca. I think I like the lyrics of this song, but I don’t mean the meaning but how it flows. Let you Down, by NF. This song is the only other more Pop like song on this playlist. I like this songs lyrics and and it’s beat and how it transitions between rap and Pop.

This is my song, I made it using loops in garage band. It’s called Waves.

Here is a link to my survey. I made it with crowd signal, if you ever need an online survey I would suggest using crowd signal, as it is very easy to use.

Oregon 2019

Hi Everyone,

From October 19th to October 25th we went to Astoria and Newport Oregon. It was an amazing trip. We went did many amazing activities such as, Zip-lining and going to different Beaches. We also learned many amazing things about sea life and tsunamis.

During this trip we had one major driving question. Being aware of your own thoughts, strategies, feelings and actions and their effects on others. I found myself in so many situations where this influenced me. One of the times I found this the most influential was on the quests. The Quests were like mini scavenger hunts around the different parks and towns of Oregon. We did the quests in groups of 5 or 6, my group was of six, there names were, Annie, Dries, Ryan, Erin and Julien. During the whole quest you had to be mindful of all those things especially your strategies and actions.

IMG_1690

Another instance, was in the yurts. Well you were in the yurts you had to be really aware of your actions. Say at 10:00pm at night you don’t want to be to noisy. The other place I’d like to talk about is the bus. On the bus you had to control your actions even more then on the quests or in the yurts because, there was your teachers and the rest of your class. Anything you do will affect 25+ other people. The hardest times to manage your impulsivity are probably on the beach. When I’m on the beach I just want to go in the water or go on the sand dunes behind the beach. Both of which your not allowed to do. The way I kept myself from doing those things is, reminding myself that the water is really cold.

The last competency we were being assessed on over the trip was working interdependently. This was the hardest competency for me as I sometimes have troubles with working in groups.

During are trip we took photos and wrote about activities and then put those all together to create a book with book creator. Here is my book.

This is a Slider of the best photos I took on the trip.

  • This is the lighthouse at Yaquina Head in Newport, Oregon.
  • This is a photo of the Ocean at Depoe Bay Oregon.
  • This is a Photo of my friends and I at Beverley Beach State Park at Sunset
  • This is Julien, Liam and myself at Ziplining
  • This is a Cool Photo of myself on the lighthouse boat near the Columbia River Maritime Museum
  • This Is a photo of the ocean at the south jetty of the columbia river

On our trip we visited many different towns starting with Astoria and Warrenton, then Tilamook and Cannon beach area, then Newport and Finally Puyallup. My favourite place was Probably Newport but all the places were amazing.

Day 1

On day 1 we had to get to school by 6:15am! It took about 10 hours to get down to Astoria although we had a lunch stop at Clark’s restaurant. The first thing we did in Astoria was go to the Astoria Column. After that we went to the beach and looked at the wreck of Peter Iredale. That night we stayed at Fort Stevens State Park.  Day 1 was a day of managing your impulsivity which mostly happened on the bus

Day 2

Day 2 was probably my favourite day. We started the day off going to Fort Stevens and learned about many military related things. After, we went to Dairy Queen and then High Life Adventures where we went Zip-lining! Zip-lining was super fun. I was a little bit nervous at first because I had never gone Zip-lining before, but I quickly realized that I had nothing to worry about. Dinner that night was at Nisa’s Thai Kitchen which was super good. We once again stayed at Fort Stevens State Park. Day 2 was another day of managing your impulsivity and also managing your thoughts and strategies which we had to do on our first quest.

This Is one of the Ziplines at High Life Adventures

Day 3

On day 3 we started out by going to the Columbia River Maritime museum. After that, we went to Pig’n Pancake for lunch which was at Cannon Beach. Then we went to Cannon Beach and It was incredibly stormy so we didn’t stay there for long. After Cannon Beach we bussed to Tillamook. In Tillamook we went to the Tillamook Creamery. That was really cool. After we bussed down to Newport where we went for dinner at Izzy’s. That night we started our 3 day stay at South Beach State Park. Day 3 was once again managing your impulsivity at cannon beach and on the bus.

Day 4

On day 4 we started out with Quests. After the Quests we had Fish’n Chips for lunch. Then we went to the Hatfield Marine Science Center where we learned about Sea Life. Dinner that night was at the Chalet which I had to make an Advertisement for (that is another project I should have a blog post about it later this week). Once Again that night was at South Beach state Park. On this day we had to manage are thoughts and strategies and how they effected other people during our quests. We also had to work interdependently.

I’m Holding a Sea Urchin!

Day 5

This day was also really great. We started the day off by making ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) at the Hatfield Marine Science Center which was really cool and challenged us to work interdependently. Then we went to Yaquina Head which was amazing! Cobble beach had so much cool sea life and the quest we did at Yaquina Head was also tons of fun. After, we went to Beverly Beach State Park, it was stunning! Dinner that night was Chinese food. This was our last night in the Yurts at South Beach State Park.

This is sure a stunning sunset at Beverley Beach State Park

Day 6

On Day 6 we had to leave Newport. We started by just going to a place in Newport where we did a quest and looked at Sea Lions. Then we went to Depoe Bay which was really cool. It had this great Socks Shop. After, we back to Washington to go to John’s Incredible Pizza Company. It was a buffet and Arcade. Then we had to leave to head to Leave to go to are last spot we stay. Ike Kinswa State Park.

A cool Tidal pool at Depoe Bay

Day 7

This Day finished off our incredible trip. We started it off by going to the North West Trek. We saw many cool animals such as Bison, Wolves, Cougars, Beavers, River Otters and many more. Finally for our last meal of the trip we ate at the Golden Corral, the most unhealthy buffet ever! The food was great but the chocolate fountain was even better. Finally to finish the trip we bussed back to Seycove. This was a phenomenal trip! As this was the day we bussed back we once again had a long bus ride and we had to manage our impulsivity over it.

This is a beaver at the Northwest Trek

One last thing I would like to say is thank you to our awesome teachers for making this trip possible!!!!!! We all really appreciate it!!!

Tectonic Books Reflection Post

Hi everyone,

This is a reflection blog post on my Tectonic Books project. For this project we had to make a book explaining some key concepts about plate tectonics. My book was called, “Alex and the Tectonic Plates.”

During this Project I used the skill of Demonstrating an Understanding and Appreciation of Evidence. I used this skill well I was adding key concepts in my books. The reason I don’t think I improved this skill in any way, was because I could have done this same work at the beginning of the project.

With our second skill which was Questioning and Predicting I don’t think I improved as I have always been able to question and predict at a similar level to this. I also have always been able have a sustained intellectual curiosity with science related material. I don’t think this skill really needs much improvement. I used this skill during the building knowledge stage as I needed to learn about different subjects to help create my book.

The third skill which is Applying and Innovating, I didn’t really notice myself using through out this project. Although, If I look back at the project now I think when we presented our books to the grade 4’s and 5’s we used it. Another instance when I used this skill was, when I helped others at the start of the project create some ideas. I’m honestly not sure if I improved this skill as I never really thought about until this project.

Here I have my book imbedded into this post for you to see below,

My Hobbies

Hi everyone,

This weeks Challenge is Free Choice. So I’m going to blog about my Hobbies. Photography, Basketball and Skiing.

Photography is a relatively new hobby for me. Ever since the end of this summer I have been interested in Photography. It started with me taking pictures of the sunsets at my cabin and my dog. But then it expanded, I started taking photos of the ocean, deer, my cousins and brother and so on. I now am just beginning to learn about photography. During the our Oregon Coast Field school (which I should have a blog post about by Monday), I really took some started to learn more about photography. I took some great shots which I will show down below.

My Favourite things to take pictures of is more natural themed images and I also really like to take silhouettes. I have many pictures of sunsets as the sunsets at my cabin are terrific. My favourite places to take pictures are my Cabin, The Oregon Coast was really good also a really nice place to take photos, especially Yaquina Head and Beverley Beach State Park.

  • This is the lighthouse at Yaquina Head in Newport, Oregon.
  • This is a photo of the Ocean at Depoe Bay Oregon.
  • This is a Silhouette of my friends at Beverley Beach State park in Oregon I will link there blogs down below
  • This is a photo of a sunset in late August at my cabin

Basketball is my favourite sport. This year is my sixth year playing basketball. I now play for the  Vancity U-14 blue basketball team. I am a wing in Basketball which means I play shooting guard or small forward. My favourite thing to do in Basketball is shoot. Here is a video of me shooting.

I also love to watch the NBA, my favourite team is the Toronto Raptors. I am really Happy as the Raptors are right now the defending champions. If you like a NBA team please comment down below to let me know which is your favourite team.

Skiing is my other favourite sport. My favourite type of skiing is downhill skiing and my favourite mountain is Sun Peaks which is a resort near Kelowna, B.C, Canada. I have been skiing since I was 3 or about 10 years. My mom has been skiing since she was really young so she started me off with skiing very early. I started skiing on Mt. Seymour

Here are some of the reasons I love skiing. I love being in nature. and I love how in skiing you get to chose what you do, you can choose your line, you can choose if you’re going to take a jump. That’s why I love skiing

So these are some of my hobbies. In the comments please tell me about your Hobbies!

Hello everyone,

This weeks challenge is all about Photos and Copyright!

For this weeks student blogging challenge we had to explain why you can’t take most images off the web. Your first thoughts are probably why can’t you take images off the internet. The reason for that is copyright, copyright is when someone makes an image that you can’t use without permission from them. You might be asking why do they care if I use there work. Imagine this, you spend six hours writing this terrific essay and then, ne of your class mates comes and copies it and hands it in. You wouldn’t feel very good right, that’s what taking a image off the web and using for yourself without permission from the creator is like.

This is a photo I took last week at Yaquina head when we were in Oregon last week for a field school. I really like his hot because of how the lighthouse sits in the photo and in addition to the awesome scenery I think the clear sky looks really nice in the background. The amazing thing about the clear skies were when were at cannon beach just two days before it felt like we were in a storm. This just goes to show how quickly life can change.

Another part of this weeks blogging challenge was to make some image task cards. I put three Images which represent me. There is a caption beneath each one explaining them.

I chose this photo because first of all I love Basketball and secondly I like the angle
I chose this photo Because I love skiing and it is also very scenic which is very scenic and shows natures beauty which I like as well
I like this Image because it shows the beach and I love the beach and the Ocean which I spend a lot of my summer on

Big or small waves crashing against the shore

Everyone happy the changing forever more

All the amazing animals like clams, urchins and gulls

Can you spot a fish, whale or boat

How amazing the beach is, I want to there today
